No Need to Eat in Your Hotel: 4 Great Breakfast Options in Prague

If you visit Prague as a tourist in a breakfast included hotel, you wouldn't find it necessary to eat outside. But if breakfast is an extra in your hotel deal, do not even think about eating in the hotel. For instance, in our hotel, extra breakfast was 11 Euros, though the greatest breakfast you can eat in Prague is around 7 Euros and it is GREAT! Maybe after reading this article, you may end up choosing an hotel without breakfast or skip your hotel breakfast and run to Savoy. I hope this helps...

1. Café Savoy

Savoy is one of the great cafes of Prague, with Art Nouveau interiors, smart service and beautiful breakfast platters. If you choose to go on a weekend,  do not forget to book a table, because the place is booked with locals, and eating upstairs does not give you the full experience.
The place serves four types of breakfasts, Continental, Savoy, French and English, though they have added their interpretation to these classical dishes. As we were in Prague, I went for the Savoy Breakfast, with toast, Prague ham, organic Emmental cheese, soft boiled egg, homemade bread, farm butter, homemade jam, nut marble cake and hot chocolate Savoy.

It costs around 7 Euros and it is impossible for a single person to finish it. My partner went for the French Breakfast, with homemade bread, fried toast with maple syrup, grilled pork sausage with French fries, Prague ham, hard-boiled eggs, blue French cheese, farm butter, croissant, seasonal fruit, fresh orange juice and café au lait. I have lived in France for a while and believe me, even a large French family do not consume so much food in breakfast.
Though do not think the quantity outweighs the quality in Savoy. Everything is cooked to perfection, hot chocolate was heavenly, the chocolate cake, which I was unable to eat there and took with me for lunch, was the best cake I have eaten for a while.
If you are going to eat one breakfast out in Prague, make it this one. Though beware of the crowds and being unable to move for a while for overeating.

2. Kavarna Slavia

I just love Kavarna Slavia for every occasion. It is good for breakfast, lunch, coffee and dessert. And wherever you sit, you face a beautiful view, either you sit by the riverside or choose to take a look on the beautiful paintings and sculptures on a great architectural marvel, the national theatre. The cafe is rumored to be frequently visited by some literary circles, including Franz Kafka, and also Nazım Hikmet visited the place when he lived in Prague. Though I admire the nostalgia in the place, I am not the one to get all emotional about drinking where Kafka had drunk. This kind of nostalgia makes you visit a place once, but for the second visit, you need something more, ambiance, food, views, service, and Kavarna Slavia has all of those.

This cafe does not have set breakfasts like Savoy, though it has a wide range breakfast menu. Warm egg dishes are cooked to perfection and for dessert, go for crepes! They are translated as pancakes in the menu, but they are French-style crepes, you can choose either sweet or salty options. We went for a lemon ice cream, fig crepe which was delicious. Warm egg dishes and crepes are around 2.5-3 Euros each.
So, if you'd like a bit of nostalgia, with great views, delicious food and decent service, visit Kavarna Slavia for a breakfast. In a beautiful day, it would also be a nice walk by the riverside, if you come from that direction.

3. Kavarna Obecni Dum

Like it is stated in its website, Kavarna Obecni Dum is indeed one of the most beautiful cafes in Prague. It is located in the ground floor of the famous Art Nouveau building, the Obecni Dum (Municipal House) and very central to the historical Prague. So keep it in mind, you are going to this cafe for its location, great interiors and service. This cafe is for experiencing Art Nouveau Prague, not for having the best breakfast of your life. When looking those beautiful chandeliers, what you eat loses its relevance anyway.
Having said that, breakfast in Obecni Dum is not bad at all, it is just not as good as the previous two. The cafe doesn't have many warm options but if you are for a cold, charcuterie based breakfast, they have delicious cheese, cold fish and meat options, served with fresh bread, rolls and croissant. They also add a slice of apple strudel to set breakfasts. Their sets are also around 7-8 Euros, though not comparable to what Savoy serves.
But don't let the absence of warm breakfast options discourage you to visit this cafe. You wouldn't be disappointed with the food when you find yourself in such beautiful interiors.

4. Trdelnik

If you are in a hurry for breakfast, have a Trdelnik. It is a delicious pastry, sold in every corner of Prague. I have seen varieties of it, though the classical trdelnik is sprinkled with sugar, vanilla, almond and I guess cinnamon. Locals suggest this is not a Czech dish, it is indeed from Slovakia, though as it is in every corner and it is delicious, who am I to judge its local origins. Just have one for breakfast, but if you are not really hungry, share one for two people, because they serve it in pretty large portions.
